County Kildare covers an area of 1,693 km², is situated just west of Dublin and belongs to the province of Leinster. The Irish name means "church of the oaks".The capital is Naas, a major commuter belt town as most of the people living there work in Dublin. The county is known for its horse breeding and Kildare town is home to the National Stud. It is the oldest town of the county housing the Japanese Gardens as well as the famous Curragh of Kildare horse-racing course. Maynooth is a town located in the north of Kildare and considered the educational centre of the county. It houses the National University of Ireland and St. Patrick's College. County Kildare is renowned as a hunting, racing and sporting area and therefore offers a lot to tourists. The Butterfly Farm is a must-see for those who are interested in nature, as it has a wide collection of colourful butterflies, reptiles, stick insects, tarantulas and bird eating spiders.
